A gentle body-centered approach to
resolving trauma and restoring ease.
Have you ever wondered…
How it is that two people can go through the same distressing event, yet only one experiences lasting trauma from it?
-
We often think about trauma as the event a person goes through (e.g., a natural disaster). But, if we think about trauma as the lasting effects an event has on a person’s nervous system, we begin to see that trauma is the response to an event that overwhelms the nervous system’s ability to cope.
And this threshold differs from person to person based on a multitude of factors, such as:
Developmental history
Current stress levels
Prior adversity & Accumulated Stress
Genetics & Temperament
Neurodiversity
Sensory Sensitivity
Hormonal cycles
Sleep and overall health
Cultural context and identity
Access to safety and resources.
And more
WHAT IS IT?
Somatic Experiencing is a trauma-informed therapy that supports two essential processes for trauma resolution:
1) It helps the nervous system complete self-protective responses that were interrupted at the time of an overwhelming event, and gently release “stuck” survival energy.
2. It increases the body’s capacity to experience a sense of ease, safety, joy, and pleasure.
How can Somatic Experiencing help?
Somatic Experiencing® supports you in developing the capacity to tolerate uncomfortable bodily sensations and emotions with greater ease.
As this capacity grows, it brings an increased sense of trust and safety you can actually feel in the moment, replacing the need to to talk yourself into it.
Your body remembers
how to feel at ease.
Are you ready to let it show you?
Frequently Asked Questions
-
SE is an experiential, process-oriented therapy that helps your nervous system complete stress responses and regain balance. Instead of analyzing the past in detail, we work with what is happening in your body right now—sensations, breath, impulses, and small shifts in tension or ease.
-
Many bodywork approaches, though well-intended, rush toward release without adequately supporting the body’s defensive responses. This can result in cathartic overwhelm that further strengthens protective bracing patterns. Somatic Experiencing® prioritizes the support of these protective responses by using a variety of pacing and regulation techniques so that you can maintain a felt sense of safety in your body throughout the process.
-
If just “talking about it” were sufficient, we’d have resolved all the trauma in the world by now. Talking is one way to process experience, but it doesn’t always reach the wordless parts of an experience. Verbal processing is powerful and can open the door to other modes of experiencing, like emotion or sensation.
